Sarady Reflects on Her Travels

Sarady, recently you travelled to USA and Canada for the first time.  We asked Sarady what ten words would you use to describe your time in these countries?

During this my first trip to the USA and Canada, I was away from Cambodia for six weeks, my experience was overwhelming and unforgettable. The ten words I would use to describe my time in these countries are fascinating, diverse, bustling, scenic, welcoming, adventurous, vibrant, mesmerising, educational, and enriching. The warmth of the people made this trip truly extraordinary.

What was the first story you told your family when you returned?

“This is a great trip so far. I miss people there already. I miss the quietness, trees and flowers, skies, and lakes there.” Even when I’m writing this, I feel I miss my time there again.

What is something different you learnt about your faith while in these two countries?

While in these two countries, I learned that the spiritual deepening of my faith is not limited to a set of beliefs or practices, but rather a continuous journey of growth and understanding. I discovered that different cultures can offer unique perspectives and approaches to spirituality that can enrich my own beliefs. In one country, I experienced a strong sense of community and ritual that deepened my connection to my faith, while in the other country, I encountered a more contemplative and introspective approach that allowed me to explore my beliefs on a deeper level. Overall, I realized that my faith is not static, but ever evolving, and that embracing diversity can lead to a more profound spiritual experience.

Since returning what is the experience or event you think about the most?

Since returning, the experience or event I think about the most is the memories and experiences shared with loved ones. The laughter, the conversations, and the moments of connection are what stand out to me the most. Hearing familiar voices, seeing familiar faces, and feeling the warmth of being surrounded by those who care about spiritual and mental health are the memories that I hold dear. These experiences have left a lasting impression on me and continue to bring me joy whenever I reminisce about them. The bonds formed and the relationships strengthened during that time are what I cherish the most.

What was your biggest surprise while in USA or Canada?

One of the biggest surprises during my time in the USA and Canada was the variety of experiences I encountered. From bustling city life to serene natural landscapes, I was constantly amazed by the diversity of activities available. Whether it was exploring vibrant urban neighborhoods, trying new cuisines, or witnessing breathtaking natural wonders, each day brought a new adventure. Overall, the rich tapestry of experiences I encountered in the USA or Canada made my time there unforgettable and left me with a newfound appreciation for the beauty and diversity of North America.

One reason for going on this trip was to talk to four partner churches about Mission Dove Cambodia.  How were you encouraged by this trip?

During this trip, I was profoundly encouraged by the unwavering support and generosity of our church partners. Their dedication to serving others and spreading love and compassion truly inspired me. Seeing their commitment to making a positive impact in the community reaffirmed my belief in the power of collective action and unity. Their kindness and hospitality made me feel welcomed and valued, reminding me of the importance of building strong relationships and connections with others. Overall, the experience of working alongside our church partners left a lasting impression on me, motivating me to continue working towards creating a more compassionate and inclusive world.
